Wellness

Wellness wooden sign with a beach on background

Did you know?

Your brain is the most amazing, energy hungry organ in the universe. It has 100 billion brain cells, trillions of supporting cells and more connections than stars. Even though your brain is only 2% of your body’s weight, it uses 20-30% of the calories you consume and 20% of the oxygen and blood flow in your body.  A piece of brain tissue size of a grain of sand has 100,000 brain cells and
a billion connections, talking to one another. Information in the brain travels up to 268mph. It has the storage capacity of 6M years of Wall Street Journal. Amazing isn't it? Yet we do not think of our brains when we think about wellness.

Healthy Brain Healthy Life

Taking care of your brain is not just an option; it's a commitment to a vibrant life. Nurture your mind with positive thoughts, challenge it with continuous learning, and fuel it with the nutrients it deserves. A healthy brain is the cornerstone of a thriving existence.

Every facet of your being, from thoughts and emotions to actions and interpersonal dynamics, is intricately connected to your brain. It is the epicenter of intelligence, character, and personality and guides every decision you make."

This is not a new idea. About 400 BC, Hippocrates wrote, - "And men ought to know that from the brain, and from the brain only, arise our pleasures, joy, laughter, and jests, as well as our sorrows, pains, despondency, and tears … I am of the opinion that the brain exercises the greatest power in the man."

It is your brain that manages your money and helps you be successful at work. And it is your brain that pushes you away from the table, telling you that you have had enough (or that gives you permission to have the third bowl of ice cream). Yet most people never really think about their brains, which is a massive mistake because success in anything you do starts with a healthy brain.

A short story

Anish Weight Loss Progression

Taming your demons - your limiting beliefs!

In 2013, my doctor informed me I was type 2 diabetic; he told me there was not much I could do about it as I was not obese or fat. He was trying to say that losing weight would not have helped me much. I took his word, accepted it, and moved on.

Professionally, I was doing very well. I was one of the fastest-growing executives from my cohort. But I had come to a point where, as a leader, I thought I had reached my ceiling. That is when, in 2015, I got into a self-discovery mode, seeking answers to one simple question – ‘Why are some people more successful than others?’

Looking back, I see that this was a pivotal moment in my career. Our lives are a compounded result of the answers we look for to the questions we ask ourselves. Ergo, we must ask ourselves GOOD and BIG questions.

The answers I was seeking led a lot of high-profile coaches and mentors to walk into my life. My subconscious mind attracted them into my life. I got introduced to Darren Hardy, an American author, keynote speaker, and advisor. One of his best books is Compound Effect. I found out about the John Maxwell Group and his teachings. I met Paul Martinelli and Roddy Galbraith at Maxwell Group. I met several other coaches and mentors along the way. I signed up for their coaching programs and masterminds. I read many books and got to a pace of reading two books a month.

As I read more and more and got coached by my mentors, the answers became more evident. The question was - ‘Why are some people more successful than others?’. It was not intelligence, educational background, luck, financial inheritances, or any other reasons to feel we would never be as successful as them.

The reasons are more in their mindset, goals, habits, consistency, what inspires them, and the people they surround themselves with – basically, they all have a ‘system of success’ that has worked for them. There is something very interesting that Darren Hardy says during his teachings. The journey to success is mundane, repetitive, and boring. But the results are spectacular. The more consistent and repetitive we are with our efforts, the more successful we will be. Interesting huh?

I had convinced myself, in my mind, that I did not like to exercise or go to the gym, and I was not particularly eager to fast. I hated going to the gym. I loved playing sports, but the gym was a big no-no. And not eating made me very irritable. By the time the Covid pandemic hit in 2020, I had started questioning myself much more and challenging my beliefs. So, I asked myself why I did not like to work out, or I did not like to fast. In the meantime, we were going through some tough times with the Artificial Intelligence startup we had started. The pandemic hit us hard and almost instantly brought our business to a screeching halt. We had two options – fold shop and let the employees go or use this time to pivot and transform the company. The three co-founders got together, decided with the latter, pivoted our business entirely, and returned to the starting line. The business is flourishing, and we have grown three times in size.

I applied the same decision to my personal life, decided to transform my health and set a goal to lose 10 pounds. But I disliked working out, so what could I do? Following the teachings of Darren Hardy on discipline, I told myself that I would go down to my basement and use the elliptical just for 10 minutes for three days in a row. If I can do that, then we will move forward. I set myself a small goal and challenged myself. I did it. Then, I challenged myself to repeat the same thing for seven days. I did it again. Then, I set myself a goal of 14 days and 21 days, and I also met those goals. I developed a habit of working out and lost about seven pounds, but then I hit the ceiling. I stopped losing weight no matter how much I tried or even if I increased the duration of my workout. Or so I thought.

During one of my cardio workouts, an ad came across my iPad while I was watching YouTube. That ad categorized me as skinny fat, which I later realized was another term for high BMI. Anyway, I signed up and bought a meal plan and a new routine of strength training workouts. I followed the meal plan to the T. It was so tough for me, counting calories and not eating anytime I could. It was the most challenging two weeks I had. I remember grabbing a handful of cashews and putting them in my pocket, but I did not eat them. Eventually, my mind and body adjusted to the new meal regime. Voila! I started losing weight again.

At the end of the 12 months of working out and counting calories daily, I had lost 37 pounds, and my BMI had reduced by 42%. My A1C dropped to five, and I had officially reversed my type 2 diabetes. I felt I could do anything. I was feeling great. I was much quicker on the tennis court. I fit into the clothes I used to wear in college. Everywhere I went, and whenever I could meet my friends (remember the days of social distancing), they noticed the transformation. They asked what I was doing and asked me to share my story with them. My self-image improved dramatically.

It took me a year to get these results. Still, I could have only achieved this by challenging my limiting beliefs and creating a system of success that worked for me. Ergo, our lives are a compounded effect of the answers we get to the questions we ask ourselves.

We focus on Brain and Mind Health

Staying true to our core principle 1 - 'You can only improve what you can measure.' we will start with a brain health assessment.

SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) scans are the best way to measure brain health; the next best thing is a questionnaire-based assessment. The assessment report will give you a brain type number and an overall Brain Fit score. Your Brain Fit Score ranges from 0-100. This unique Brain Fit score uses your responses to the questions in the Brain Health Assessment. Your Brain Fit Score is based on seven categories: Brain Health, Sleep, Memory, Executive Function, Inner Peace, Mood, and Flexible Thinking. Like your Brain Type, your Brain Fit Score is variable as well.

The report will provide an action plan that will give you specific steps you can take right away, will provide a dietary recommendation to improve your brain health and make recommendations on brain-directed nutraceuticals to support your physical and mental energy levels, making it easier for you to follow a brain-healthy program every day.

To continue to improve your brain health and to learn new habits to keep up with an healthy brain attitude, you can take on courses that we teach at Empower Mindset.
